What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of enhancing website visibility in Search Engines Result Page (SERP) organically.

The organic way means without using paid promotion and advertisement. It has been often researched and proven that the higher your website appears in the search results page, your website gets more visitors thus leading to more sales.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is not rocket science. With proper planning and execution, you can list your website on the first page of the search engine result page or even great – rank at the first on the first page. There are a few things that you should do right which will be thoroughly covered in this article.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in Nepal is not a new concept. Nepal is a beautiful country and renowned all over the world for her natural beauty and her people’s custom and traditions. Nepal is home to eight of the world’s highest fourteen mountains including famed Mt. Everest – highest mountain in the world. Nepal is also the birthplace of Lord Buddha – founder of Buddhism and home of the living goddess Kumari. All these gifts have elevated Nepal’s position as a tourist destination in the world. Tourism has become one of the leading income generating sources for Nepal’s GDP. Many tourism based companies are operating in Nepal and mostly sell similar packages like Everest Trek and Annapurna Trek. There is fierce competition in the tourism sector and no wonder Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in Nepal is mostly sought out by the tourism sector.

Other than tourism companies, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in Nepal is sought by the education sector like educational consultancies, colleges and by hospitality sectors like restaurants and hotels. There is also demand for an off-page SEO service – Google My Business – for local SEO in Nepal. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in Nepal is rapidly growing business and it has a good future too. There are many digital agency and marketing companies that are selling good SEO packages.

How to do SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) process can be divided into the following subdivision:

  • 1. Detail study of the project
  • 2. Keyword research
  • 3. On-page optimization
  • 4. Off-page optimization

1. Detail study of the project

There should be a clear understanding of what your website does, who are the website potential visitors, their interests, what is your unique selling point, etc. With these things clear on the mind, you can be sure that you’re heading towards the right direction.

2. Keyword research

Keyword is your best friend when it comes to SEO. People put keywords into search engines, based on people’s input search engine process and delivers output in front of them as a result.

After a detailed study of your business and website, you might get an idea of which keyword your website should appear. If you have only a handful of keywords and you don’t know how people are searching for keywords like yours, don’t worry. You will get tips where you should be looking.

# Brainstorm a potential list

  • Think about a search pattern that people tend to do for the business that is similar to yours. This includes a broad keywords list that you will ultimately narrow down to specific keywords.
  • Get a suggestion from Google. When you type something in google search, it shows you similar searches that are being made.

    Also, You can also get ideas when searching on YouTube. This is important because these are the things that are being searched.

  • There is also a suggestion in the last part of the Google Search Results Page.

  • The Google keyword planner – It lets you input a group of keywords and shows list of keywords similar or exactly like you typed that is being searched. It includes monthly search volume, bidding competition, max and min bid value, etc.

Tips
If your business, brand or site is brand new or if you want to focus on keywords that aren’t competitive – target long-tail keywords

# Keyword structure

Keyword can be divided into three main categories:

  • a. head
  • b. body
  • c. (long) tail

a. head has usually single-word keywords with lots of search volume and competition. For example: if we take a closer look at the word ‘insurance’ or ‘vitamin’, someone searching for insurance might be looking for car insurance, maybe life insurance, or a simple definition of a word.

b. body keywords are about 2-3 word phrases that get decent search volume i.e. to say at least 2,000 searches/month but are more specific than head words like ‘life insurance’ or ‘order vitamins online’.

c. (long) tail keywords are long i.e. to say four or more than four words that usually very specific. It has usual search volume of 10-200 searches/month. Example: based on insurance it can be something like ‘affordable life insurance for senior citizens’ or ‘buy vitamin B complex online’.

3. On-page SEO

On-page SEO as the name suggests – SEO techniques are applied to the website itself. On-page SEO includes site title, description, image alt text, anchor tag optimization, using 404 pages, redirects, user-friendly URLs, SSL, etc.

Some of the on-page SEO techniques you should be focus on:

  • Making URLs short as short URLs rank better than long URLs.
  • Including target keyword in your URL.
  • Using LSI keywords. LSI keywords are those keywords that are interpreted by search engines in finding out what your content is all about. It is a closely related word. For example, a keyword ‘food’ shows results including ‘food plan’, ‘food recipe’, etc.
  • Publishing long content. On average, you should target about 1890 words for the best results in search.
  • Optimizing your title tag for CTR (Click Through Rate). Try to include numbers in your title tag and also use brackets or parentheses.
  • Using external links. Try to have about 2-5 outbound links to authority resources in every single article.
  • Focusing on internal linking – it is advised to have few links or link back to older pages on your site whenever you publish new content. You can also try to link those pages that you think needed a boost. But it is not recommended to have many links than necessary – like 15 links in articles.
  • Maximizing site speed. It is advised that you should invest in premium hosting.
  • Using multimedia. Use screenshots, videos, infographics, etc to make your content more engaging.

Apart from above listed techniques, you have to also focus on technical optimization.

# Technical optimization

1. Finding and deleting ‘zombie pages’

zombie pages are those pages that are in your website that adds no value to your website and maybe listed in google indexing. It also includes old URLs – if you have migrated to new website and your old website link might be still indexed in search engine. When people see those pages in search engines and click it, they either get wrong information, 404 errors, which ultimately hamper your website reputation.

You can check your zombie pages by typing site:yourwebsite.com in google search. Google will list all the pages of your website that are currently indexed by Google. If you see more pages than you have previously thought then these pages might be zombie pages.

Most common type of zombie pages are

  • Archive pages
  • If you site is in wordpress, you might see category and tag pages.
  • If your site has search option, you might see search result pages.
  • Old press releases
  • Boilerplate content
  • Thin content – pages having less than 50 words.
2. Checking site is mobile friendly

You can check your site is mobile friendly or not by simply using Google mobile friendly test tools.

3. Checking for duplicate content

You can check whether your site has duplicate content or not by checking for url. Example: www.yourwebsite.com or yourwebsite.com or http://www.yourwebsite.com or https://www.yourwebsite.com

4. Using pagespeed insights

You can use Pagespeed Insights to analyze your website page speed. In doing so, it is better to analyze more than your homepage i.e. 2-3 internal pages too. Also check in webpagetest.org, GTMatrix. Also for image compression use online platform like Kraken.

5. Finding and fixing indexing problems

Use Google Search Console or screaming frog for this. Also, if you don’t want Google to index certain pages, throw a no index tag on those pages.

6. Checking your organic traffic.

Use Google Analytics for this. In the Google Analytics, go to Acquisition -> All traffic -> Channels; hit ‘organic search’. Also you can set dates to required value, adn check whether or not audiences are increasing.

7. Analysing backlinks

When other websites have a link that directs visitors to your website then this link is called a backlink. It is very important because it enhances your website authority on the internet. You can check how many backlinks do you have from Ahrefs, Majestic SEO, Moz for referring domains and domain authority.

In SEO, it is often said ‘Content is king’. Content is the main part of which visitors come to your website. If they get a clear understanding of what you’re saying then they trust you and might come again in future. If not, they may never come back. For writing good content, it is better to have –

  • very short intro
  • small paragraph
  • lots of subheaders
  • use visuals, images and video
  • optimize for User Experience (UX) signals
10. Flattening your website architecture

Flattening your website architecture refers to making sure that it is not taking more than 3 clicks to go from homepage to any pages on your websites.

4. Off-page optimization

Off-page optimization refers to all the task that is done outside of website that enhances the visibility of your website in search engines. It is as important as the on-page optimization. Off-page optimization techniques includes:

  • Local SEO
  • Social Media Marketing
  • Link building

Local SEO

As the term defines – Local SEO refers to the optimization of your website targeting the local area. An area where your business is located. It is very useful for the business whose selling market is mostly focused in the local area like restaurants, clothing stores, cafes, cleaning and maintenance services, etc. Though there are many options in doing off-page SEO, the best solution for this is to make a Google My Business account.

Google My Business lets you create an engaging profile for your business. It even allows you to mark your business locations in Google Maps. Put your business photographs, websites, call, and message options. It even allows visitors to write reviews about your business.

Social media for off-page SEO

Social Media Marketing

We can talk the whole day about the influencing capacity of social media. Billions of people use social media. It is very rewarding for your business to make a presence on social media. There are many social media platform but it is recommended to have a Facebook account, Instagram account and if you are planning to post videos about your business then have a youtube account. Don’t forget to link your website wherever possible.

Link building

Link building means increasing the links from another website that is referring to your website. It is important because it enhances your website authority on the internet and search engines tend to trust your website than others if both have similar content. There are many ways to increase your site’s backlinks. Recommended techniques include Guest posting, forum posts, having Wikipedia pages, quora, etc. It helps you and your business in building networks, sending referral traffic and building your brand.
